In Remembrance: Adrienne Shelly

 

     Adrienne Shelly, the actress best known for her work in independent features such as director Hal Hartley’s The Unbelievable Truth (1989) and Trust (1990), has passed away on November 2, 2006 in New York City, NY. She was 40.

 

     Born on June 16, 1966 in Queens, NY, Shelly was raised in Long Island and studied film production at Boston University before relocating to New York to pursue acting. She made her feature film debut in back to back pictures from Hal Hartley- The Unbelievable Truth and Trust.

 

     Based in New York City, Shelly appeared in such films as the comedy Hexed (1993), Sleeping With Strangers (1994) and the drama Grind (1997). She also made guest appearances on several television series including Homicide: Life On The Street, Early Edition, Oz and Law & Order.

 

     Shelly wrote and directed two short films – Urban Legend (1994) and Lois Lives A Little (1997) – before making her feature-length directorial debut, the comedy Sudden Manhattan (1997). Her second directorial attempt, I’ll Take You There (1999), won her a best director award at the U. S. Comedy Festival.

 

     More recently, Shelly appeared in the independent films Dead Dog (2000), Revolution #9 (2001) and Factotum (2005). Shelly had recently completed work on the romantic comedy Waitress with Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion, which is scheduled for release next year.
